Email Routing Types in cPanel

cPanel supports three types of email routing based on the domain’s Mail Exchanger (MX) records:

  • Local Mail Exchanger: The lowest numbered MX record points to an IP address on the hosting server. Emails are delivered locally.
  • Backup Mail Exchanger: The lowest numbered MX record points to an IP address not on the hosting server. This acts as a backup mail server.
  • Remote Mail Exchanger: No MX records point to the hosting server’s IP. Emails are routed to a remote server.

Important Notes

  • Always verify the domain’s MX records before changing the email routing setting.
  • Incorrect settings may result in emails not being delivered to your server or mailbox.
  • Use "Automatically Detect Configuration" for most standard setups unless you have a custom mail server.
