Overview of TLDs - Transfer
Domain Transfer
This page explains the Domain Transfer process for domains transferring to BigRock, including eligibility requirements, supported TLDs, and the timeframes involved in completing a transfer.
What is a domain transfer?
A domain transfer is the process of moving a domain name from one registrar to another while keeping the domain ownership unchanged.
In simple terms:
It allows you to shift your domain management to BigRock without changing the domain name, website, or email services.
Key points:
- The domain must be active and unlocked at the current registrar.
- An Authorization Code (EPP/Auth Code) is required to initiate the transfer.
- The domain cannot be transferred if it is:
- Within 60 days of initial registration
- Within 60 days of a previous transfer
- Most generic TLDs (such as .com, .net) support domain transfers.
- Domain transfers usually take 5–7 days, depending on the TLD and current registrar.
- In most cases, a 1-year renewal is added to the domain upon successful transfer.
- If a domain is renewed and then transferred within 45 days of renewal, the 1-year free renewal is not applicable.
During the transfer:
- The domain remains active and continues to resolve to the website and email services.
- DNS settings generally remain unchanged unless modified by the user.
- The domain cannot be transferred again for 60 days after completion.
What happens if not transferred:
- If the transfer is not approved or completed:
- The domain remains with the current registrar.
- No changes are made to the domain configuration.
- The domain must be renewed before expiry to avoid entering the redemption stage.
